Originating from Greece, Tzatziki sauce is a versatile condiment (and rather easy to make). In the past, I frequently purchased Tzatziki from the grocery store and I noticed that there is quite a range of healthiness across common brands. This homemade Tzatziki sauce is super healthy so you do not need to feel bad about consuming it in large amounts- which you likely will! The sauce is consists of yogurt, cucumber, garlic and herbs. We all know Tzatziki is delicious but it also offers health benefits. Let’s explore its history, ingredients and plentiful potential uses.
Tzatziki has deep roots in Greek cuisine and has been a part of the Mediterranean diet for centuries. The name comes from the Turkish word “cacik,” which is actually a similar yogurt-based sauce. Tzatziki provides a refreshing, cooling mouth feel and hence was traditionally served as an accompaniment to spicy dishes. Along with the Mediterranean diet, tzatziki has rightfully earned worldwide popularity due to its health benefits and versatile deliciousness.
Tzatziki sauce is simple to make with only a handful of ingredients, each contributing to its unique taste and health advantages.
a. Yogurt: Yogurt provides the creamy foundation of tzatziki sauce. Greek yogurt, being rich and thick is most common. Nonfat Greek yogurt is a great way to keep this sauce low fat and fairly high in protein. Yogurt is also a good source of probiotics and calcium for your gut and bone health.
b. Cucumbers: Cucumbers provide the refreshment to the creamy yogurt. Low in calories, high in water content, vitamins and minerals, they supply a hydrating crunch to the sauce.
c. Garlic: Garlic infuses tzatziki sauce with a savory, pungent flavor. Garlic brings its own health benefits to the table with immunity boost and heart health.
d. Herbs: I prefer dill, but you have a choice of herbs her. Fresh dill, mint and parsley will enhance the aroma and flavor of our sauce. Such herbs contribute essential vitamins and antioxidants.
Beyond being a delightful dip for pita bread or a topping for gyro sandwiches, tzatziki sauce can elevate a wide range of dishes:
- As a salad dressing: It can serve as a healthier alternative to traditional salad dressings. You may even thin it a bit with the addition of a little water or extra lemon juice- I do not personally mind the clumpy and enjoy the texture over my mixed greens.
- Accompaniment to grilled meats: This tzatziki pairs excellently with grilled lamb, chicken and even fish. Try it with my delicious Mediterranean Grilled Chicken Skewers. Or with a high protein kabobs from Trader Joes or Costco.
- Veggie dip: Use tzatziki as a dip for raw vegetables like carrots, celery, and bell peppers for a healthy and flavorful snack.
- Spread for sandwiches and wraps: Replace traditional spreads with tzatziki for an exciting twist in your sandwiches and wraps.
- Marinade for kebabs: Toss your meat or vegetable kebabs in tzatziki sauce before grilling or roasting to infuse them with Greek goodness.
Tzatziki sauce is quite a treasure from Greek cuisine. The ever sought after combination of nutrition and flavor, it can spruce up many a different meal. Creamy, refreshing and versatile it’s no wonder it has garnered popularity around the globe. Serve it a party as a dip, with a homemade meal or salad- you can’t go wrong!
